Notes from Media Briefing 6/3/03

Will Koch, president and general manager of Holiday World & Splashin' Safari, began the briefing by stating that foremost in his mind was the fact that the Fellner family is burying their daughter today. The thoughts and prayers of the park family are with the Fellners on this sad day.

Koch then thanked the members of the general public who have emailed, called, and sent cards and letters of support during the difficult time. He also commended the park staff for the comfort and support they have shown to one another since the accident.

He then introduced Independent Ride Inspector Tony Rossi who explained it was still too early for him to discuss the possible cause of the accident. He discussed the roller coaster train and the steps made in developing and manufacturing the trains.

Rossi's company is Leisure Tech Services, from North Wilwood, New Jersey. His credentials include:
1. Licensed NAARSO (National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials) Level III Inspector & Instructor
2. Worked with Reverchon & Schwarzkopf
3. State Inspector for New Jersey
4. Worked on construction of Silverwood Amusement Park in Athol, Idaho
5. Worked at Morey's Pier in Wildwood, New Jersey

Rossi stated a person who is sitting correctly in a roller coaster seat--with backside down on the seat and feet on the floor of the car--would not come out during a ride, even if that person were not holding on.

Rossi's inspection will include a review of all Raven maintenance records and every inspection record. Engineers will be on hand Friday to assist in "test dummy" testing of the ride, as part of the inspection process.

Will Koch concluded the briefing by saying that the State Ride Inspectors have completed their inspection of The Legend roller coaster, which will be open tomorrow, June 4.
