The world’s longest water coaster, Wildebeest, is the “landslide winner” in the Best New Water Park Ride category of a recent poll conducted by About.com.
“Even back when it was just a design on paper, we had a really good feeling that Wildebeest would be a hit,” says Dan Koch, president of Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. “Thanks to everyone around the world who voted to make Wildebeest the number-one water-park ride.”
The multi-week “2011 Readers’ Choice Awards” poll was hosted by About.com, the 65th-most-visited website on the Internet.
Using HydroMagnetic technology, the four-person Wildebeest boats fly up a series of eight hills utilizing linear induction motors (LIMs). The water coaster begins with a conveyor ride “lift hill,” followed by a 38-foot drop at a 45-degree angle. The two-and-a-half minute ride includes a total of eight drops, adding up to 178 feet of total “drop.” Wildebeest’s length is the greatest of any water coaster in the world: 1,710 feet, a third of a mile.
Now in its fourth year, the About.com Readers’ Choice Awards honor the best products, features and services across more than a dozen categories, ranging from technology to hobbies to parenting and more, as selected by its readers.
