Teddy gets a field trip

So nice to see the school's teddy bear was invited to come along for some Halloween fun!

A well-cropped photo

What a great photo! Peeking through the stalks, with just the right amount of Halloween spookiness.

Hay!

Growing up in the 1960s, my dad fought the good fight to teach his children proper English.

That included the use of the word "hey."

Such a harmless word by today's standards, but to this day when I hear someone say, "Hey!" I hear Dad's voice, "Hay is for horses."

How ironic that I would end up living in rural southern Indiana, married to a farmer.

Hay is for horses! And, I've learned, moo-cows.

Hay, it seems, is also for Happy Halloween Weekends:

Happy hay bales

Eeeeek! I'm thinking even the horses won't be nibbling on this hay bale:

Smaller bales provide safety bumpers for our young farmers as they pedal furiously around their special tractor track.

The fall rains have encouraged new growth on the bales. Wonder if we should bring in some HoliGoats for a quick snack?

Continuing on our agri-tourism theme, we took the concept of a sandbox and went a little corny.

That's right, a Corn Box.

And finally, we have hayrides to take you out to our 12 acres of corn mazes.

Happy Halloween Weekends tickets are available online, discounted to just $24.95 per person ($17.95 for Guests-under-54" and Seniors).

Hey! We hope you can join us!

The park in the middle of cornfields

Ah, there's more than a kernel of truth to that – we are, indeed, a park surrounded by cornfields!

And during Happy Halloween Weekends, we bring the cornfields into the park:

It's interesting to witness the different approaches taken by the amazing mazers.

Some families grab a map and power-walk their way through the stalks in 15 or 20 minutes, while others happily meander map-free through the 12 acres, enjoying the sunshine and cooler temperatures.

No worries, we have an "escape" plan for anyone who who is ready to pop out, but can't quite find the exit. (This corn is a whole lot taller than last year's crop!)

Here's a look at how the corn maze was designed and then cut:

Our corn mazes are included in your admission to Happy Halloween Weekends. Tickets are available online, discounted to less than $25 per person ($17.95 for Guests-under-54" and Seniors). With Graveyard Smash, other Halloween shows, great rides, spooky mazes and 2,913 pumpkins … well, when it comes to family-friendly celebrations, we like to think we're outstanding in our field.

Fall protection

Fall protection? Who needs protection from brilliantly colored leaves and crisp, cooler weather?

Oh … that kind of fall. This morning started off with safety training.

This is Richard:

Safety training

Richard spoke to our staff members who don't just dream of going high places as part of their job. These hard-working members of our team aim high in every way.

Who gathered in the plaza at Splashin' Safari this morning? Let's see, it was our Coaster Cats, Maintenance Technicians, IT, Warehouse, Carpenters, Painters, Grounds and even a member of Communications (Nathan likes to take wide shots of corn mazes from way-up-high), plus our Safety Committee. They all pulled together to gain new knowledge about fall protection.

Safety Training

Safety Craig holds a sample of a safety harness that's only used for training. See the "Danger" tag? How better to learn what to look for on your safety harness than to study one that's been deemed unsafe?

Lee and Tony are going over every inch of their harnesses. They're looking at the stitching and checking the fabric to make sure it isn't worn. The metal pieces are also examined to be sure they're not nicked or otherwise damaged.

Safety Craig and Coaster Cat Drew work through the checklist. And then they check it twice (Santa's rubbed off on us over the years!).

When your office has no walls or ceiling, you're glad for days like today.

Stay safe, everyone!

Costumes welcome

During our Happy Halloween Weekends, you're invited to wear family-friendly costumes.

You know, like these:

Halloween costumed

Our Happy Halloween Weekends page includes information about safe and appropriate costumes for your visit.

For example, Safari Sam would need to remove his hat before riding our roller coasters.

Meanwhile, we have just two more weekends left to celebrate – we hope you can join us! Tickets for Happy Halloween Weekends are available online, discounted to less than $25 per person ($17.95 for Guests-under-54" and Seniors).

Hoping to win tickets to Happy Halloween Weekends? Here's a fun contest from our friends at WBKR radio:

They're picking winners all this week. Good luck!

Whom do we thank …

…for this pretty weather?

I say we should thank Christy:
