The 11th Annual Holimpics

Team Australia 2015

Every year, Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari’s HR department hosts the event of the season: the Holimpics. It’s the ultimate test of theme park athleticism where our Team Members form teams to “represent” different countries from around the world.

Tonight is the night

Tonight one country (or group of our Team Members) will emerge victorious.

Once upon a time I competed in the Holimpics.

Full disclosure: I’m pretty much just writing this to brag.

My first year, I joined a team hesitantly.

You see, I’m obnoxiously competitive and wildly uncoordinated. It’s not a pretty color to wear when playing team sports. They recruited me anyway.

“You’ll only have to do the Water Cup Challenge,” they said.

“It’ll be fun,” they said.

We were team Belize. We had shirts that said “You better Belize it.” I got a little excited. My siblings and I used to come along with my mom (who was director of entertainment at the time) to cheer on the entertainers. I was finally going to compete in the famed Holimpics.

Team Belize 2014

You better Belize we had shirts made

Then I found myself running against the current in the Bahari River. I didn’t do well.

But Lauren (my sister) and I made up for it in the water cup challenge at The Legend. We knew the perfect strategy from years of watching the event. (And to the enthusiasts who like to compete in the challenge every year at HoliWood Nights, I will not be revealing that here).

We came back with completely full cups of water (as did Ashley, our Marketing Director now and Cody, our special events intern at the time).

Team Belize came in second place that year.

So the next year we tried again. That year we were Team Australia and we had shirts made that said “#AreYouKoalafied. So we looked pretty cool. I did not have to run against the Bahari river’s current. But I did come back with another full cup.

That year, we won.

I stopped competing then. I figured I was too good. (To be clear: I didn’t actually think that at all, I just figured I wouldn’t ever do better than second place followed by winning in back-to-back years).

Team Australia 2015

Shout-out to my awesome team members who won this event! Everyone but me on that team was #koalafied

So this is my long way of bragging that I only competed only twice in this event, and I came in second place the first year and won the next.

But also, to all the teams competing tonight, good luck!

Win or lose, it’s going to be one of the best nights of your life.

Pleasing pets the World over

Holidog Inn Photo

When we say we are “#1 for Family Fun,” we mean the entire family, even the furry members. Just inside our admission gates is the Holidog Inn, a kennel where even Holidog feels comfortable telling his friends to “Relax, it’s the Holidog Inn.”

Holidog and his buddy PaxHere’s Holidog with his buddy Pax, along with some tips about our Holidog Inn:

  • Please bring proof of current rabies vaccination to Holiday World Services before boarding any pet in a kennel.
  • You have the choice of an air-conditioned indoor ($20) or an outdoor ($10) kennel.
  • Have more than one pet? For an additional $5 per pet, you may keep both pets in the same kennel. We number the kennels so all pets are accounted for; we also take detailed notes about your pet’s needs.
  • Sorry, we don’t take reservations. Kennels are available on a first-come basis.
  • Kennels come in a variety of sizes for large and small pets.
  • Our Holiday World Services staff does not handle the pets out of safety for the pet. They will be happy to:
    • Check on pets throughout the day and make sure they have water;
    • escort and supervise one adult owner per pet during boarding, visits, and removal; and
    • contact owners if pets need care or cleaning
  • You may return throughout the day to provide some TLC and take them on potty breaks as needed. (We provide a small grassy area for this purpose.)
  • Feel free to bring any toys or other special items for your pets to help make them feel more at home during their stay at the Holidog Inn.
  • Don’t forget your pet’s food. We will provide water, dishes, and litter bags for them.
  • Sorry, no overnight Guests. Please pick up pets prior to Holiday World’s closing time.

Outdoor Kennels: Your pets can enjoy the shade of the shelter house along with a nice breeze coming from our outdoor fans. Just ask Bella; she sure enjoyed her visit to our outdoor kennels.

Holidog visits Bella at the Holidog Inn

One more thing: Dogs are not the only pets who visit the Holidog Inn. We’ve hosted all types of visitors, even a pot belly pig! Within our indoor kennels, we provide a back room for smaller pets such as cats, hamsters, and rabbits. This room has a sliding door that separates them from dogs to ensure all of our guests enjoy their stay with us! If you would like more information about our Holidog Inn, please visit our website’s Rules & Services page or simply stop by Holiday World Services during your next visit.

‘People’ loves our Festive Flurries

Festive Flurries - Sweet Stuff

Holiday World’s Festive Flurries are new this year. And people are noticing.

Well… “People” is noticing.

That’s right! Our Festive Flurries were featured alongside our Thanksgiving Dinner from Plymouth Rock Cafe in a list of “20 Amusement Park Foods from Across the Country That Everyone Needs to Try at Least Once.”

I’m glad to see our Festive Flurries featured because they answer one of the most important dilemmas of my life: What do you want to eat for dessert?

Do you stick to a classic milkshake or flurry?

Do you go with a cookie?

But what if you want a candy bar?

Peanut Butter Festive Flurry Closeup at Fountain

If you think I’m writing this blog post and not thinking about the Peanut Butter Festive Flurry… you are sadly mistaken

What about cake?

At Holiday World, we believe you shouldn’t have to choose just a milkshake–or even just a flurry. Our festive flurries combine some of the best of the dessert world into one delicious cup:

The Reese’s Peanut Butter Festive Flurry features a peanut butter flurry with a whipped cream topping and two Reese’s cups.

The Red Velvet Festive Flurry involves a piece of Red Velvet cake on top.

You get the idea here… and there are four flavors! Just take a look at these beauties!

Where to find them:

Festive Flurries are available today at Sugarplum Scoop Shoppe (located in Santa’s Merry Marketplace):

  • Resse’s Peanut Butter
  • Red Velvet Cupcake
  • Strawberry Shortcake
  • Monster Cookie

So what are you waiting for? “People” said you have to try them at least once!

I’ll be here trying all of them at least once.

Popular Mechanics: Hoosier best?

Hard-hat stickers for Voyage work

Sorry for the “hoosier” thing in the subject line, but it’s such low-hanging fruit, you know?

When Popular Mechanics decided to name the best roller coaster in each state, they kindly took a look at us.

And our coasters.

Because they know stuff.

And the winner is …

We’ll let The Gravity Group tell you:

That’s right – The Voyage takes top honors for Indiana!

Voyage construction

Congratulations to The Gravity Group and the late Will Koch (a Hoosier, born and bred) for creating such an amazing wooden coaster.

And kudos to our Coaster Maintenance Technicians for keeping The Voyage sailing the blue seas – er, skies – year after year!

The bucket list

1998 brochure clip

Have you seen The Bucket List? It was a really popular movie back in 2007 and popularized the term “bucket list.” It’s a funny but ultimately sad story about making the most out of life. Of course, this comes with the understanding that end-of-life is inevitable.

And that leads me to this story about our original bucket attraction, Monsoon Lagoon.

It’s been around nearly forever, right?

Here’s a snip from our 1998 brochure

We introduced Monsoon Lagoon to our water park that year. Splashin’ Safari was only five years old at the time.

1998 brochure clip

Come to think of it, the entire water-park industry was young then. We’ve all come a long way in the past two decades. The life-expectancy quotient has increased as designers, uh … soaked in knowledge of how water attractions age.

After 21 great seasons of fun, it’s time to retire Monsoon Lagoon. The giant bucket has dumped its last waterfall onto delighted children below. In truth, it lasted longer than expected, and we’re grateful for that. And it’s good to know more recent models were built with a longer life expectancy in mind. (We’re talking about you, Kima Bay!)

On a lighter note here’s a bit of #HoWoHistory trivia: Long-time employee Joe Hevron made us all giggle in our 1997 naming meetings with his suggestion to call this water attraction the Leaky Tiki.

Founder’s Day

Ronald Reagan. Louis J. Koch, Santa Jim Yellig
Louis J. Koch

Santa Claus Land Founder Louis J. Koch, 1882-1979

Today is the birthdate of Louis J. Koch. Let’s declare it to be Founder’s Day!

Did you know that Holiday World started out as a retirement project?

It was back in 1946. Our original name was Santa Claus Land.

Louis J. Koch was an Evansville industrialist (he was one of the sons in the George Koch Sons) and thought it was a shame that a town named Santa Claus wasn’t bustling with jolly fun. He and his wife, Clarice, had nine children and they loved celebrating Christmas.

Louis J. Koch’s plans to open a park themed around Santa Claus started in the early 1940s.

Construction began on August 4, 1945

On August 3, 1946, Santa Claus Land opened. Early rides included trains, a jeep-go-round, and playground equipment. Christmas dinners topped the menus. (And yes, this was a full nine years before Mr. Disney opened his park.)

“Mr. Louie,” as employees called him, was a train aficionado. He commissioned Ted Buehn, a model-train enthusiast, to create what many remember as the Freedom Train.

Originally, it was called the Santa Claus Land Railroad.

Before long, Mr. Louie’s middle son, Mr. Bill, joined him (this was long before the Saturday Night Live skit came out). As they worked together with other family members, Santa Claus Land began to grow into what is now Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari and fourth-generation Koch family ownership.

The Santa Claus Land Railroad became the Mother Goose Land Train and eventually the Freedom Train. Since 2013, Holidog Express has clickety clacked around the track. The original train is currently on display in front of the Liberty Bell Shoppe.

But it all began with a dream

And a town with a magical name.

That’s Louis J. Koch in the middle, with the polka-dot bow tie. On his right is a future president and to his left, ol’ Saint Nick.

Today is Mr. Louie’s birthday. Born on June 12, 1882, he lived to be 97.

Happy birthday, good sir – and Happy Founder’s Day!

That “Harper Valley PTA” Girl!

Jeannie C. Riley ad

What in the world do Jeannie C. Riley and the song Harper Valley PTA have to do with Holiday World?

The Grammy Award winner’s connection is with Santa Claus Land, actually; she performed her hit Harper Valley PTA in concert here on Sunday, June 11, 1978.

That’s 41 years ago!

This ad is from our archives

Jeanie C. Riley "That Harper Valley PTA Girl" ad

Something else in that folder … an article that ran in “Santa’s Country” weekly newspaper. In it, Ms. Riley is quoted as saying, “I’ve never seen anything like [Santa Claus Land]. I didn’t know there was a place where kids could go to sit on Santa’s lap and talk to him.”

Her husband, Mickey, chimed in: “This place could really grow into something big. The countryside around here is beautiful. I love it. And the hospitality is unbelievable.”

A sensory story

Here’s a story from a few years back, when a coaster-loving autistic teen needed less of a sensory storm for his first ride on Thunderbird.

I remember hearing about this kind act back when it happened and am grateful for the reminder posted this week by Coaster Chit Chat.

We probably all have sensory issues when it comes to storms – thunder can be quite alarming! I remember, long ago, my beloved Grandma Cassidy trying to calm my young brothers and me during a wild storm. She told us about a woman she knew who would hide in a closet during storms. That darling leprechaun of a woman quickly brought us to helpless laughter. We shouted, “Grandma! You’re standing with one foot in and one foot out of the closet!”

She had calmed the storm

… even as it raged around us.

How else can we help calm the sensory storm?

We have a Calming Room, located in our First Aid building.

Please don’t hesitate to use it during your stay with us.

And finally, here’s another story (from another park) that gives us hope for the world.
