Splashin’ out of Summer

Adam Lori and James ready to jump into the Wave

Splashin’ Safari has officially closed for the season, and the only way to truly say goodbye is with a splash, right?

We’re sad to see it close. We’re also excited that summer makes way for Happy Halloween Weekends which means pumpkin pie flurries (and hopefully some fall weather because my sweater collection needs some love).

So to commemorate this bittersweet moment, our Attractions Management team did a celebratory leap. With our seasonal lifeguards and slide attendants cheering them on, VP James, Director Lori, and Water Park Manager Adam took a dip… in full uniform.

Frankly, the video of them jumping in The Wave in full uniform was too good not to share…

That may be a wrap on the Splashin’ Safari season, but it’s not the end of the season for us. We’ve got pumpkin spice funnel cakes starting up this weekend plus two new shows for Happy Halloween Weekends.

That said, our Splashin’ Safari employees worked hard this summer, and they deserve credit for it. To all our seasonal employees who have been out in the sun watching out for the safety of our Guests: thank you. We truly appreciate everything you do and how hard you’ve worked.

Also, if you visit often and have favorite lifeguards, never fear–many of them continue working during Happy Halloween Weekends. You may just see a few in one of our walk-through attractions such as Holidog’s 3-D Adventure, Carnival Chaos, and ScareBNB.

…And if you start feeling sad about Splashin’ Safari being closed, maybe play this video again.

Cheetah Chase Check In

Cheetah Chase Slide Pieces
First Bit of Concrete for Cheetah Chase

The first footer being poured. Cheetah Chase will have 56 total.

Ever since we announced that we’re building the World’s First Launched Water Coaster, we’ve received a lot of comments and questions about it.

One of the most-asked questions: “When are you going to start building Cheetah Chase?”

Well, that wait is over.

We started just over a week ago when the first footers were poured in the area between Bahari River and Kima Bay.

At just before 9am, the first concrete truck pulled in and the slide’s foundation began to take shape!

But what about the slide pieces?

Cheetah Chase Slide Pieces

The first pieces of Cheetah Chase to arrive from Canada.

We got a special delivery this Thursday.

The first four truckloads of fiberglass were delivered from ProSlide.

The first pieces to arrive include sections of the slide’s “flying saucer” turns. Those are the turns that have an open section on the inside that you can look up into as you change directions.

You can get a closer view of these pieces if you visit during Happy Halloween Weekends.

If you take one of our Hay Rides to the Corn Mazes, you’ll pass by the pieces that have arrived.

It just so happens that the colors of the slides match the upcoming holiday perfectly!

Are you ready to ride?

Be sure to purchase your 2020 Season Pass by this Sunday, September 15 to save up to $51 per pass. You’ll be able to ride all season long next year.

The real Cheetah Chase may not be finished yet, but you can still take a virtual ride now!

Caution: Corn Puns Ahead

In Indiana, we endure corn comments and jokes, but there is a kernel of truth to them.

We know corn and how to grow it, you could say we’ve cornered the market.

Our 2019 Happy Halloween Weekend corn maze is no exception,
it is A-MAIZE-ING!

Corn Maze Cutting

Each spring, a local farmer plants 12 acres of corn to prepare for Happy Halloween Weekends.

When the stalks are about knee high, we cut in that year’s design as seen below:

2019 Corn Maze Map

Now that we’re done with the puns, here are a few other kernels of information:

  • Our corn maze and hay rides come at no extra cost!
  • We created this ‘Mazed & Cornfused Map. Simply pick one up as you enter the maze so you won’t have to play it by ear.
  • Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Stay on paths. (Creating your own shortcut will ruin the maze!)
  • No running or horseplay.
  • Leave no trace – Please do not touch, pick, or eat the corn.
  • Watch your step! Paths could be muddy.
  • Wheelchairs access in the maze may be rough or muddy.
  • Do not smoke or vape in the maze.
  • Dispose of trash in the trash cans by the maze entrance, please.
  • Lost or overwhelmed? Locate the nearest ‘Mazed & Cornfused station on the map and pull the rope to raise the flag – we’ll be right there!

Happy Halloween Weekends start Saturday, September 21 and run through October 27, 2019. Best discounts on tickets are available here on our website.

We can’t wait to meet you at the end of the maze and give you a big corngratulations!

The Ride that Got Away

(A note from your “Holiblog Editor,” Leah: Introducing Sabrina! She’s our new media relations manager and a long-time fan of Holiday World. We’re so excited to have her join the team, and she’s excited to share her stories of the park from years ago and today.)

_____

1997.

Hootie was still with the Blowfish.

George Clooney was Batman.

Our hearts did not go on like Celine Deon suggested (there was room on that door, Rose).

I was FINALLY tall enough to ride the Firecracker Roller Coaster.

The walkway leading to the Firecracker Roller Coaster in 1984.

At that age my favorite attractions were: The Scarecrow Scrambler, The Wave Pool, and Raging Rapids.

Up to that point I’d never been tall enough to ride the Firecracker. My secret was that I wasn’t terribly heartbroken by the restriction.

I remember our last trip of the 1997 season. After a great day in both parks, we were leaving Splashin’ Safari and making our way to the Firecracker Roller Coaster.

(Not to be confused with the incredibly restored Firecracker calypso ride.)

Here’s a visual of us having fun in the 90’s:

Harpenau family circa 1997.

The non-existent “after picture” would’ve looked much different.

All I saw was height, metal, and speed.

The Firecracker was in operation for 11 seasons at Holiday World.

I had a meltdown that rivaled the hoopla of Y2K madness.

Regardless of meeting the size requirement, I was not ready to ride the Firecracker.

I vividly recall vowing that 1998 would be the year I faced my fear as I watched my big sister ride (Did you know you can now “parent swap” on rides?)

1997 was the final season for the coaster to make way for Holidog’s FunTown.

As Summer begins to make way for Fall, the 1997 Sabrina would tell you to do it all!

Happy Halloween Weekends are six weekends packed of the very best in Fall foods, entertainment, and memories to be made for everyone.

Believe me, Winter is L O N G and you don’t want that kind of baggage to follow you!

In those 20 years I’ve developed a love for coasters and  I’m excited to work where families make memories they will treasure for a lifetime.

Regardless if you ride them all, we will be here to help you make new memories in the Spring of 2020.

The rides, slides, entertainment and treats you’ve always loved and new additions like Cheetah Chase will all be here.

Time heals all wounds, the world’s first launched water coaster sure speeds up the process!
