The Story of Holiday World’s New Drone Show

The largest addition to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari for 2022 is the “Holidays in the Sky” Drone and Fireworks Show.

Nightly through July 31st, 2022, finish your day at the park at the German American Bank Party Plaza for a dance party, and then watch the magic take flight with 300 illuminated drones.

I recently had the chance to catch up with Eric Snow, Holiday World Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer. He gave me some insights on creating the show and all the work his team put into the spectacular experience.

With no new attractions or rides this year, the team knew they wanted to create something for 2022 to add to the park’s entertainment lineup. The number of trees and hills throughout the park add some obstacles to creating an experience for hundreds of people, so they took their ideas to the sky.

Over the last few years, drone shows have started to become more popular at large events. With the latest technology utilized, the sky becomes a giant canvas for hundreds of illuminated drones, allowing for an extraordinary 3D animated show. The creative process for the Holidays in the Sky show began 6 to 7 months ago. The team put together a storyboard with ideas and worked closely with the drone company to craft the perfect plan, being sure to include all the elements and highlights that truly represent Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari.

From there, they started working on the animations.

Personally, I think the animations and transitions are some of the best parts of the show. It is something that isn’t expected at first. From the tip of the hat from Frosty the Snowman to a slice of pie being cut, they thought of it all.

Eric also pointed out some nuggets of details they made sure to include. This includes when the pumpkin becomes a jack-o-lantern. When you watch, the face is essentially being carved out and the lights are flickering like a candle inside. Be sure to pay close attention when you see it! No detail was missed. Pure perfection.

New Drone and Firework Show: Holidays in the Sky at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari

It’s not just about the drones. Yes, 15 minutes of 300 illuminated drones dancing in the sky is the showstopper, but the whole idea expanded to creating an end-of-day experience for guests. About 30 minutes before the drone show is a DJ Dance Party that fully embraces the “Light Up the Light” theme. With countless LED lights, light-up ground discs, bubbles, glow sticks, etc., the dance party is a hit for the whole family. It’s a great way to end a day of fun at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari while getting pumped for the Drone & Fireworks Show.

When asked what his favorite part of the show was, Eric had the perfect answer, “Hearing the reactions from the crowd.”

My experience with anyone from the Holiday World team has been the same. They genuinely keep their guests’ happiness at the forefront of their minds.

Hearing that excitement from the crowds firsthand was unforgettable. My family and I experienced the show for the first two nights of production and the crowd was filled with endless excitement with harmonious cheers. It is truly a must-see, in-person event.

Pictures and videos do not do it justice.

While the show in the sky is large and can be seen from all over the area, the best viewing area is the German American Bank Party Plaza in the Thanksgiving section. The show has a soundtrack that plays from that area, which you must hear to get the full experience. If you want to feel like a VIP for the Holidays in the Sky show, check out the Elevated Experience. We did it one night and would definitely do it again!

A Dad’s Guide to Holiday World

It’s no secret that my husband, Paul, does a great deal of the grunt work when taking our family on trips and outings. While we usually “divide and conquer” our tasks, he doesn’t get enough credit for all he does. There are several guides on the internet for visiting an amusement park, but few from a dad’s point of view. This is why I went straight to the source for writing a dad’s guide to Holiday World.

So I’d like to introduce Paul – a seasoned, minivan-driving, dad-joking, cargo shorts and dad-hat wearing, father and stepfather of four.

A Dad's Guide to Holiday World: Paul with Santa Claus

Here are a few of his tips.

Work smarter not harder.

Going to a theme park with the family is always a blast, but it’s also going to include some work. Such as packing for the trip, loading and unloading the vehicle, planning, etc. Don’t make it harder on you or anyone else. Work smarter from the beginning with these tips to guarantee the best fun with your family, the least amount of stress, and the most minimal amount of ibuprofen.

Prepare with the appropriate attire.

Having a good hat, sunglasses, comfortable clothing, and backpack is essential. Skip the skinny jeans and polos, and opt for shorts and loose-fit clothing. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and/or water shoes for the waterpark. If you have younger children, you’ll want to bring a stroller or wagon (or rent one at the park). Ponchos and lanyards are a great idea for the entire family. In case of rain, and if you are a season passholder, the lanyards minimize the risk of a lost pass.

Prioritize the essentials.

Whether you’re going for just a day or the entire week, make sure you have the essentials handy. We’ve experienced a flat tire in the parking lot, motion sickness, driving for hours with stinky teenagers, and even getting lost without a cell phone signal when traveling to Holiday World. These are things that you can be easily prepared for by keeping a few essentials in your vehicle.

  • Car emergency kit (tire gauge, jumper cables, spare tire and jack, flashlight, etc.)
  • Insurance information (auto and health)
  • Beach towels (for Splashin’ Safari)
  • Cell phone battery charger
  • Road atlas (for travel areas without a GPS signal)
  • Car air fresheners (after a long day at the park, you’ll want these)
  • An extra change of clothing for everyone

Assess and plan.

Before arriving, check the park hours and weather to plan accordingly. When you arrive at the park, grab a map and check for ride closures. Locate the First Aid station, sunscreen stations, free Oasis drink locations, and bathrooms. These are essential dad locations. The family will ask where these are throughout the day. There are five Family Restroom locations in Holiday World and three in Splashin’ Safari.

Make a plan of where to go first, get the younger kids’ height wristbands at the Height Measurement Station (located at the entrance of each park), and have everyone lather up with sunscreen before heading to the attractions.

For the older kids who are too cool to hang out with their dad, plan designated check-in times and locations. Teens ages 14 and up can visit the park without parental supervision.

Rest when you can.

There’s no reason to wear your feet (or back) out. Enjoy every opportunity to take a quick break and sit down. By the end of the day, your body will thank you.

If you’re overheating, the kids are too. Encourage indoor things when you’re getting too hot. It might be the perfect time to grab a drink or food at an indoor restaurant or check out a shop.

A Dad's Guide to Holiday World: Riding Gobbler Getaway

Take advantage of Holiday World’s parent benefits.

A few of the amazing benefits include these perks:

  • Stroller and wagon rentals are affordable and easier than bringing your own to the park.
  • Locker rentals are available and also an affordable way to avoid carrying around your stuff all day.
  • Splashin’ Safari offers free U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket rentals in sizes for kids, youth, and adults. They are available on a first-come, first-serve basis at all three wave pools.
  • The “Parent Swap” option is beneficial if both parents want to ride and can’t at the same time. Parents can swap waiting in line without waiting multiple times in line while the other rides.
  • Free Phone Find wristbands are an added layer of safety for younger kids. The Holiday World map shows multiple locations where you can get free wristbands for your children. There’s a place to put your cell phone number on the wristbands for children to wear in case they wander off. Park staff are trained to use the wristbands to contact parents.
  • Free Package Pickup service is available for up to two hours before the park closes. Anything you purchase can be picked up later at Holiday World Services so that you don’t have to carry your packages around the park.

Have a few jokes up your sleeve.

“What do you call a kid who doesn’t believe in Santa?”
A rebel without a Claus.

Nothing makes a trip to Holiday World with dad more complete than a few dad jokes. Whether you are helping the kids patiently wait in line for a ride or road tripping to the park, a little bit of fun and humor will go a long way.

Bring a festive spirit.

Holiday World brings out the kid in every adult. Take a picture with Santa, sing along to the Christmas music, feast on a Thanksgiving meal in July, and go on a thrill ride.

Have fun being a big kid, with the kids.

8 Tips for Road Tripping from Cincinnati to Santa Claus, Indiana

Want to go visit Santa Claus? You can – anytime of year!

Just head to Southern Indiana where you’ll find holiday – and Santa Claus-themed fun – everywhere. The best part? Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari  is there at the heart of the town for all your family fun this year. We have been already this Summer – and LOVED it, so I wanted to share some tips for road tripping from Cincinnati to Santa Claus, IN.

Road Tripping from Cincinnati to Santa Claus: Posing at the Front Gate

You’ve got to head down Kentucky and around Louisville to get over to Santa Claus. It can be a quick two-and-a-half hour road trip from Cincy, but all of us from the area know that 71/75 can throw you some curveballs, whether it be construction or accidents. On our way down, the highway was closed about a half hour from Louisville. We had to all be diverted through a small town and then reconnected to the highway a bit farther down. It took us an hour and a half to go 7 miles. Here’s where tip #1 comes into play – DON’T WAIT UNTIL EVERYONE HAS TO PEE TO ACTUALLY STOP!

I was so glad we took a quick break while traffic had still been moving nicely, even though the family didn’t think they had to go to the bathroom. We were able to empty our bladders and fill our tummies with that pit stop. We would have been in trouble if we had waited even ten more minutes on that part of the road trip! (The trip home was a breeze with traffic, though.) Bonus tip: When you stop, let the little ones RUN and get some energy out before you’re cooped back up in the car again.

Tip #2: Bring a spare potty if you have small ones out of diapers. The portable potties for potty training work well, and don’t forget toilet paper and disinfectant wipes!

Tip #3: Always have an insulated water bottle for everyone. Keeping water (or whatever drinks) cool, especially in the hot parts of the year, will keep everyone happy and hydrated. Plus, Cincinnati Mom Collective has awesome insulated water bottles that fit great in car cup holders on their Swag Shop!

You may be tempted to overpack, but tip #4: Less can often be more. We always think we need more than we actually do.

Road Tripping from Cincinnati to Santa Claus: Photo with the Water Tower

Tip #5: Give each person their own backpack for a spare change of clothes, toiletries, snacks, and activities. It will make life so much easier than trying to hand out or divvy things up while in movement on the road. While it’s a short road trip to Holiday World, you never know when you might get stuck in traffic or need things on hand quickly without the irritation of rummaging through packed suitcases en route.

Tip #6: Screen time is okay! Yes, it’s a good idea to play all the fun car and I-spy games, but at some point, you’re just going to want some peace. Maybe your vehicle has built-in DVD players, maybe the kids are using tablets… make sure you have a couple options, headphones, headphone splitters, and charging cables and cords just in case.

To go with screen time, remember tip #7: Pack lots of snacks! Now, don’t bring the whole kitchen pantry, but make sure there’s a little bit of variety and there’s enough for everyone to make it in between the main meals while you’re on the road for 2-3 hours at a time.

On the line of snacks… tip #8: Bring trash bags! These can even be plastic grocery bags you want to reuse. You can either give a bigger bag to each row of the car, or each person can get their own small bag to be responsible for throwing their own garbage away. You’ll definitely want these if there are diaper changes. Also, you can use some of these in case someone gets carsick on the way. Keeping the car as clean as possible will save you a lot of irritation/stress after the road trip is over.

There are many road trip mom personalities. Cincinnati Mom Collective contributing writer and local comedian, Kate Mock Elliott, coined a few: The Oprah, The Norma Desmond, The Simon & Garfunkel, and the Rihanna. I think I fall somewhere between the latter two. You can read her article here to see which you are.

Whatever your personality and however you survive your road tripping with your crew, when you finally make it past a stretch of farmland and all of a sudden see roller coasters in the sky, signs for Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, and their own water tower, the road trip will all be worth it!

Plus, if you stop in the Halloween part of the park and pick up a silly hat, like my daughter’s squid hat, the road trip home will be that much more entertaining.

What to Pack for A Great Day at Holiday World

Summer is finally here, and the kids are out of school!

If you are like me, you already have a few trips to Holiday World planned for the summer.

My boys, ages four and seven, are always excited to take the short trip from Owensboro to Santa Claus for the day. We love to spend the first part of the day in Holiday World, then head over to Splashin’ Safari for the rest of the day.

They already made a list of their top rides and slides to go on this summer. My seven-year old is finally tall enough to ride the roller coasters, so we are making sure to hit all the coasters in the park to find the one he likes the most. I am ready to go on my favorite, The Voyage. My four-year old isn’t quite big enough to ride the roller coasters, but he is really looking forward to riding the Raging Rapids and my childhood favorite, Frightful Falls.

Something I have found really helpful is making a list of the items to take with us inside the park. I don’t want to overpack and have to lug around unnecessary items. And believe me – overpacking is my jam. So, I like to keep it to a minimum. Below a list of what I bring with me when my family and I visit the park.

What to pack for your trip

For the adults in the family:

  • Swimsuit: You can’t go to Holiday World without making a stop by Splashin’ Safari. For maximum efficiency, wear your swim suit to the park under your street clothes.
  • Towel: Make sure you have a towel to dry off after your day of fun.
  • Backpack or waterproof bag: You need a place to store your towels and keep your phone and cards.
  • Cash or credit card: There are multiple restaurants and snack stands around the park where you can sit, relax, and enjoy some food. Gluten free meals and snacks are also available.
  • Phone: You will want to document all the fun you are having. Don’t forget to tag Holiday World in your photos!

Pack a phone or camera to take photos during your visit!
For the kids:

  • Swimsuit: Your little ones will be ready to head over to Splashin’ Safari and enjoy some water time.
  • Stroller or wagon: Standard sized strollers and wagons are allowed at the park. There is also an option to rent a stroller or wagon at St. Nick’s Rentals just inside the front gate.
  • Towels: The kids will need to dry off after a dip in the wave pool.

For the nursing or pumping mom:

  • You can bring your pump with you! There’s a designated air-conditioned Mother’s room inside the First Aid building in Splashin’ Safari. There is even a fridge where you can store your milk for the day.

Don’t worry about packing

  • Sunscreen: Don’t worry about packing bottles of sunscreen. It is free at the park!
  • Drinks: They offer free soft drinks, as well as water, Gatorade, and some other caffeine-free options when the kids have had too much sugar.
  • Money for parking: Parking is always free!

I hope my tips helped you make the most out of your day! You are now fully prepared to enjoy the fun that happens at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari each summer!

8 Things for Free. Really!

Holidays in the Sky Drone & Fireworks Spectacular

As a mom, I know how expensive kids can get. If you have kids, you know, too. We’ve all heard that nothing in life is free, but that’s not true in magical Santa Claus, Indiana. Read on for how you can get 8 things for FREE – really – on your next trip to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari!

1. Free Soft Drinks

If you’ve ever been to any theme park – with kids or not – you know how thirsty everyone gets from walking around, being in the sun, screaming on a thrilling ride, etc. It’s a safe bet that you also know how much you can pay for that souvenir cup for a day or for single drinks at a time. A lot of parks you go to have all sorts of hidden costs once you are in. I put free drinks at the top of the list here, because for some reason, paying several dollars for a non-alcoholic beverage just pains me. At Holiday World, free soft drinks (including Gatorade, lemonade, iced tea, coffee, and water) are available throughout both parks all day, every day. I’m in!

2. Free Parking

I’m putting this at number two, because it’s another pain point for me when taking the family to any type of park, zoo, and the like. I feel like you have to create a whole budget just to do something fun with the kids – knowing that I don’t have to factor in drinks OR parking is just a breath of fresh air for me.

3. Free Sunscreen

Ever forget to pack sunscreen for yourself or the kids? Yeah, me, too. It happens, but not to worry! Free sunscreen bottles are located around both parks: in front of the restroom buildings in Splashin’ Safari and by the west steps of Holiday Theater in Christmas, in Holidog’s FunTown, next to Tippecanoes by The Alamo, and in Thunderbird Plaza in Holiday World. These pump bottles contain 50 SPF Australian Gold sunscreen.

Free Sunscreen is available at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari

4. Free Use of Inner Tubes

You know the water parks where you either have to bring your own inner tubes or pay to rent theirs? Not at Splashin’ Safari! Here, the use of inner tubes is completely free.

5. Free Wi-Fi

Do your kids really need Wi-Fi while at an amusement park or on a water ride? I highly doubt it, but maybe they want to listen to music on their headphones while they wait in line for a ride or pull up the park map on their phones! Free Wi-Fi comes in really handy then.

6. Free “Santa-tizer”

These days, it’s more important than ever to keep grubby hands sanitized! Fortunately, Holiday World offers free “Santa-tizer” for your visit to the park. (See what they did there – I’m sure the dads will love this play on words!)

7. Free Package Pick-Up

Free Package Pick-Up is available for purchases made prior to two hours before Holiday World’s closing time. Packages can be picked up at Holiday World Services a minimum of two hours after purchase up until park closing. No more lugging around – especially when it’s hot! – all your kiddos begged you to buy for them!

8. Free Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Doing the environmentally-friendly thing and switched to an electric vehicle? They offer an Electric Vehicle Charging Station for Tesla and other Electric Vehicles in the Legend Parking Lot – free, of course! There are:

  • 8 dedicated parking spaces for Tesla charging
  • 4 dedicated parking spaces for other EV charging using J1772 connectors
  • Available FREE to Holiday World visitors on a first-come basis during regular park hours
  • Please alert a parking attendant of your intent to use the charging station once inside the Legend Lot

Discount Tickets

The great perks don’t stop with the freebies listed above. If you’re in the military, a nurse, a first responder, or a foster family, you can be eligible for great savings on tickets! Click HERE to learn more.

Shows & Special Events

Don’t forget about all the shows and special events you get to enjoy at the park in addition! Right now, here are the shows they have planned –

And, for their special events –

So, what are you waiting for? Get your tickets today, and plan your next fun adventure with your family at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari!
