8 Tips for Road Tripping from Cincinnati to Santa Claus, Indiana

Want to go visit Santa Claus? You can – anytime of year!

Just head to Southern Indiana where you’ll find holiday – and Santa Claus-themed fun – everywhere. The best part? Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari  is there at the heart of the town for all your family fun this year. We have been already this Summer – and LOVED it, so I wanted to share some tips for road tripping from Cincinnati to Santa Claus, IN.

Road Tripping from Cincinnati to Santa Claus: Posing at the Front Gate

You’ve got to head down Kentucky and around Louisville to get over to Santa Claus. It can be a quick two-and-a-half hour road trip from Cincy, but all of us from the area know that 71/75 can throw you some curveballs, whether it be construction or accidents. On our way down, the highway was closed about a half hour from Louisville. We had to all be diverted through a small town and then reconnected to the highway a bit farther down. It took us an hour and a half to go 7 miles. Here’s where tip #1 comes into play – DON’T WAIT UNTIL EVERYONE HAS TO PEE TO ACTUALLY STOP!

I was so glad we took a quick break while traffic had still been moving nicely, even though the family didn’t think they had to go to the bathroom. We were able to empty our bladders and fill our tummies with that pit stop. We would have been in trouble if we had waited even ten more minutes on that part of the road trip! (The trip home was a breeze with traffic, though.) Bonus tip: When you stop, let the little ones RUN and get some energy out before you’re cooped back up in the car again.

Tip #2: Bring a spare potty if you have small ones out of diapers. The portable potties for potty training work well, and don’t forget toilet paper and disinfectant wipes!

Tip #3: Always have an insulated water bottle for everyone. Keeping water (or whatever drinks) cool, especially in the hot parts of the year, will keep everyone happy and hydrated. Plus, Cincinnati Mom Collective has awesome insulated water bottles that fit great in car cup holders on their Swag Shop!

You may be tempted to overpack, but tip #4: Less can often be more. We always think we need more than we actually do.

Tip #5: Give each person their own backpack for a spare change of clothes, toiletries, snacks, and activities. It will make life so much easier than trying to hand out or divvy things up while in movement on the road. While it’s a short road trip to Holiday World, you never know when you might get stuck in traffic or need things on hand quickly without the irritation of rummaging through packed suitcases en route.

Tip #6: Screen time is okay! Yes, it’s a good idea to play all the fun car and I-spy games, but at some point, you’re just going to want some peace. Maybe your vehicle has built-in DVD players, maybe the kids are using tablets… make sure you have a couple options, headphones, headphone splitters, and charging cables and cords just in case.

To go with screen time, remember tip #7: Pack lots of snacks! Now, don’t bring the whole kitchen pantry, but make sure there’s a little bit of variety and there’s enough for everyone to make it in between the main meals while you’re on the road for 2-3 hours at a time.

On the line of snacks… tip #8: Bring trash bags! These can even be plastic grocery bags you want to reuse. You can either give a bigger bag to each row of the car, or each person can get their own small bag to be responsible for throwing their own garbage away. You’ll definitely want these if there are diaper changes. Also, you can use some of these in case someone gets carsick on the way. Keeping the car as clean as possible will save you a lot of irritation/stress after the road trip is over.

There are many road trip mom personalities. Cincinnati Mom Collective contributing writer and local comedian, Kate Mock Elliott, coined a few: The Oprah, The Norma Desmond, The Simon & Garfunkel, and the Rihanna. I think I fall somewhere between the latter two. You can read her article here to see which you are.

Whatever your personality and however you survive your road tripping with your crew, when you finally make it past a stretch of farmland and all of a sudden see roller coasters in the sky, signs for Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, and their own water tower, the road trip will all be worth it!

Plus, if you stop in the Halloween part of the park and pick up a silly hat, like my daughter’s squid hat, the road trip home will be that much more entertaining.

What to Pack for A Great Day at Holiday World

Summer is finally here, and the kids are out of school!

If you are like me, you already have a few trips to Holiday World planned for the summer.

My boys, ages four and seven, are always excited to take the short trip from Owensboro to Santa Claus for the day. We love to spend the first part of the day in Holiday World, then head over to Splashin’ Safari for the rest of the day.

They already made a list of their top rides and slides to go on this summer. My seven-year old is finally tall enough to ride the roller coasters, so we are making sure to hit all the coasters in the park to find the one he likes the most. I am ready to go on my favorite, The Voyage. My four-year old isn’t quite big enough to ride the roller coasters, but he is really looking forward to riding the Raging Rapids and my childhood favorite, Frightful Falls.

Something I have found really helpful is making a list of the items to take with us inside the park. I don’t want to overpack and have to lug around unnecessary items. And believe me – overpacking is my jam. So, I like to keep it to a minimum. Below a list of what I bring with me when my family and I visit the park.

What to pack for your trip

For the adults in the family:

  • Swimsuit: You can’t go to Holiday World without making a stop by Splashin’ Safari. For maximum efficiency, wear your swim suit to the park under your street clothes.
  • Towel: Make sure you have a towel to dry off after your day of fun.
  • Backpack or waterproof bag: You need a place to store your towels and keep your phone and cards.
  • Cash or credit card: There are multiple restaurants and snack stands around the park where you can sit, relax, and enjoy some food. Gluten free meals and snacks are also available.
  • Phone: You will want to document all the fun you are having. Don’t forget to tag Holiday World in your photos!

Pack a phone or camera to take photos during your visit!
For the kids:

  • Swimsuit: Your little ones will be ready to head over to Splashin’ Safari and enjoy some water time.
  • Stroller or wagon: Standard sized strollers and wagons are allowed at the park. There is also an option to rent a stroller or wagon at St. Nick’s Rentals just inside the front gate.
  • Towels: The kids will need to dry off after a dip in the wave pool.

For the nursing or pumping mom:

  • You can bring your pump with you! There’s a designated air-conditioned Mother’s room inside the First Aid building in Splashin’ Safari. There is even a fridge where you can store your milk for the day.

Don’t worry about packing

  • Sunscreen: Don’t worry about packing bottles of sunscreen. It is free at the park!
  • Drinks: They offer free soft drinks, as well as water, Gatorade, and some other caffeine-free options when the kids have had too much sugar.
  • Money for parking: Parking is always free!

I hope my tips helped you make the most out of your day! You are now fully prepared to enjoy the fun that happens at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari each summer!

8 Things for Free. Really!

Holidays in the Sky Drone & Fireworks Spectacular

As a mom, I know how expensive kids can get. If you have kids, you know, too. We’ve all heard that nothing in life is free, but that’s not true in magical Santa Claus, Indiana. Read on for how you can get 8 things for FREE – really – on your next trip to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari!

1. Free Soft Drinks

If you’ve ever been to any theme park – with kids or not – you know how thirsty everyone gets from walking around, being in the sun, screaming on a thrilling ride, etc. It’s a safe bet that you also know how much you can pay for that souvenir cup for a day or for single drinks at a time. A lot of parks you go to have all sorts of hidden costs once you are in. I put free drinks at the top of the list here, because for some reason, paying several dollars for a non-alcoholic beverage just pains me. At Holiday World, free soft drinks (including Gatorade, lemonade, iced tea, coffee, and water) are available throughout both parks all day, every day. I’m in!

2. Free Parking

I’m putting this at number two, because it’s another pain point for me when taking the family to any type of park, zoo, and the like. I feel like you have to create a whole budget just to do something fun with the kids – knowing that I don’t have to factor in drinks OR parking is just a breath of fresh air for me.

3. Free Sunscreen

Ever forget to pack sunscreen for yourself or the kids? Yeah, me, too. It happens, but not to worry! Free sunscreen bottles are located around both parks: in front of the restroom buildings in Splashin’ Safari and by the west steps of Holiday Theater in Christmas, in Holidog’s FunTown, next to Tippecanoes by The Alamo, and in Thunderbird Plaza in Holiday World. These pump bottles contain 50 SPF Australian Gold sunscreen.

Free Sunscreen is available at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari

4. Free Use of Inner Tubes

You know the water parks where you either have to bring your own inner tubes or pay to rent theirs? Not at Splashin’ Safari! Here, the use of inner tubes is completely free.

5. Free Wi-Fi

Do your kids really need Wi-Fi while at an amusement park or on a water ride? I highly doubt it, but maybe they want to listen to music on their headphones while they wait in line for a ride or pull up the park map on their phones! Free Wi-Fi comes in really handy then.

6. Free “Santa-tizer”

These days, it’s more important than ever to keep grubby hands sanitized! Fortunately, Holiday World offers free “Santa-tizer” for your visit to the park. (See what they did there – I’m sure the dads will love this play on words!)

7. Free Package Pick-Up

Free Package Pick-Up is available for purchases made prior to two hours before Holiday World’s closing time. Packages can be picked up at Holiday World Services a minimum of two hours after purchase up until park closing. No more lugging around – especially when it’s hot! – all your kiddos begged you to buy for them!

8. Free Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Doing the environmentally-friendly thing and switched to an electric vehicle? They offer an Electric Vehicle Charging Station for Tesla and other Electric Vehicles in the Legend Parking Lot – free, of course! There are:

  • 8 dedicated parking spaces for Tesla charging
  • 4 dedicated parking spaces for other EV charging using J1772 connectors
  • Available FREE to Holiday World visitors on a first-come basis during regular park hours
  • Please alert a parking attendant of your intent to use the charging station once inside the Legend Lot

Discount Tickets

The great perks don’t stop with the freebies listed above. If you’re in the military, a nurse, a first responder, or a foster family, you can be eligible for great savings on tickets! Click HERE to learn more.

Shows & Special Events

Don’t forget about all the shows and special events you get to enjoy at the park in addition! Right now, here are the shows they have planned –

And, for their special events –

So, what are you waiting for? Get your tickets today, and plan your next fun adventure with your family at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari!

Preparing for Your First Visit to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari

This weekend is the unofficial start to summer, which means an increase in outdoor events, extra quality time with family, and vacation fun! As a highly organized, planning parent, it is also time to make sure the family is ready for all the scheduled trips and summer adventures. If you are planning your first visit to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, here are some reminders and tips to be prepared for the perfect first visit.

Research Places to Stay
You can get over two fun-filled days at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. We are planning our trip next month for three park days. For overnight accommodations, right next door is Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph, which we will be staying at. Check availability and research other places here. There are nearby options in Santa Claus, IN, and other towns 20-30 minutes away with lodging.

Utilize the Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari Calendar
The Holiday World website is full of resources, all in one place. You can browse all the rides, insider tips, and everything to make the most of your visit. The best place to start planning is in the Calendar. Select the day(s) you will be visiting to see that day at a glance: The park hours, daily deals, show schedule, menus, maps, trip tips, and more. Pro Tip: Bookmark each calendar date page for your visit or add shortcut links to your phone home screen. During your visit, you can easily access everything in one place.

Create a List of ‘Must-Ride’ Rides & Slides
Sit down with the family to research and discuss the rides and slides that each person wants to visit. You can filter the rides on the website by type, experience, park section, and height requirements. Have each person pick 1-3 favorites and rank any others by the desire to ride. This way when you get to the park, everyone’s picks are prioritized, and you can make sure no ride is missed. Pro tip: Group the rides on the list by park section for easy navigation during the visit.

What to Bring While at the Park
The park offers free soft drinks (including Gatorade, lemonade, iced tea, coffee, and water). Bring or purchase a reusable water bottle to fill and keep with you all day. You will also find free sunscreen throughout the park, so no need to add that to your bag. If you are planning to visit the waterpark and/or ride water rides, wear a swimsuit under a t-shirt & shorts. The concrete can get hot, so wear water shoes to keep your feet protected (plus they dry fast). You can also rent a locker, if needed.

Follow Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari on Social Media for Timely Updates
Social media is a great place to get punctual updates before, during, and even after your visit. Follow the park’s social account(s) so new updates appear in your feed. It is a great resource for deals, shows, giveaways, new foods, weather updates, and so much more. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter.

Join the Holiday World Fans Facebook Group
This Facebook group is full of a wealth of information and tips from seasoned park goers. You can search the group for specific questions or scroll through to read amazing experiences and feedback. I spent some time browsing the group for tips for first-time visitors and we asked in a post for some tips.

It is very helpful reading what others recommend and have experienced.

Here are a 10 bonus in-park tips sourced from the Facebook Group:

  • “Get kids measured when you enter the park so they can get a bracelet and be ready to ride the rides.” Alicia C.
  • “Get there early. Be dressed in swim wear and ready to go into the water park at opening (11). You can do the dry park when done in the water park. Less crowed this way.” Linda W.
  • “Get ready to have the time of your life at the cleanest park and friendly staff and def taste all the food you can.” Mark P.
  • “Bring your stuff in a backpack so much easier to carry around all day. Or rent a locker in the waterpark.” Christa C.
  • “Start at the HallowSwings. Head up to Thunderbird. Then water park. Then other rides. Do fourth of July last. That is an easier hill leaving than the one next to HallowSwings.” Angie E.
  • “If you are going solo…. work the park by section, bypass the longer lines on the first pass, use what wait time you do have to keep an eye on the time to catch the entertainment, arrive at each show a little early and use that time to snack. Pick one of the major eats for a sit down meal. Once you have made a full lap of the park retrace your steps for shorter lines on what you skipped. Also…. always ride the carousel.” Brent S.
  • “Get there early. Get a locker also if you don’t want to carry your stuff. And have fun!” Shauna W.
  • “Eat at the Alamo or Plymouth Rock. Gobbler Getaway is a great ride mid-afternoon for a way to chill out and cool off. Wear dry fit clothes and crocs. They’ll dry so much quicker.” Elizabeth M.
  • “We always wear rash guards and swim trunks or skirts if we’re doing both parks. That way you can go between them without changing.” Dierdre M.
  • “Go ahead and get the two day tickets so you can take your time and enjoy all the little things about the park.” Steve R.

While I love planning ahead, I am sure visiting Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari and just exploring would be an exciting option for others! Enjoy the rides, try lots of food, take pictures, and have the best time!

If you have a tip for first-time visitors, leave it in the comments!

Made to Thrill Part 2… or is it 3?

Hey everyone! We’ve just restocked the HoliShop with our Made to Thrill items as of 5/22/22. If you want to make sure you’re getting the best stuff, skip on over to the Holishop quickly… but only after you read my blog. It’s mostly pictures, ok?

—–

If you recall, we’re big fans of Made to Thrill

If you haven’t heard of them, Made to Thrill designs theme park merchandise that’s a little more… stylish than your average theme park merch. Prior to me sending a huge fan-girl email, Made to Thrill exclusively created low-key designs that never said what the attraction was, but it was always clear from Josh’s incredible design skills.

So in 2019, a simple partnership began with a single T-shirt.

We were the first park ever to partner with Made to Thrill

The first shirt sold very well, so we introduced an entire collection of posters for each of our 4 main roller coasters, t-shirts for each of our roller coasters, and of course our Santa Claus Land Poster and t-shirt. Here’s a reminder of those poster designs:

Together, we even introduced an exclusive 75th Anniversary Pre-Order Only Limited-Series T-Shirt in 2021.

Sorry folks, you can’t order it anymore–it was a one-time deal.

Today, Made to Thrill now works with Cedar Point, Kings Island, and SO MANY PARKS!

We’re so proud of Josh and how far he and his art have gone, but we’re even more excited that he continues to churn out extraordinary new art each year.

Now, I’m excited to share Made to Thrill’s latest art and our 2022 Collection!

Our 2022 Collection

This year, we’ve added two of our most beloved attractions to our lineup of Made to Thrill Merchandise this year:

Raging Rapids

 Raging Rapids Poster

 and Frightful Falls

Frightful Falls Poster

And we’ve introduced a new skyline poster:

We’ll call this the second collection, but we’ve had three… maybe four rounds of incredible artwork from Made to Thrill, and you know it won’t stop here. If you’re not already clicking “purchase” over on our HoliShop, comment below with what you’d like to see Made to Thrill design next!

Introducing the HoliBloggers

When you work in the Communications Department at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, you get to talk to Guests in two ways.

The first is all about sharing information with them. We want to make sure to tell everyone about what’s going on in – and around – the park. Our goal is to make it easy for someone to plan a trip to come see us. Plus, you can help everyone to make the most out of their day.

The second is all about telling stories from around our parks. We love pulling back the curtain to show everyone what makes us unique or what might be happening behind the scenes.

Unfortunately, we don’t always have as much time to tell stories as we’d like when things get busy in the summer. And we thought that needed to change! We want to keep all of our fans in the loop when they’re planning to come see us.

That’s where our new HoliBlogger program comes into the picture.

Earlier this spring, we started looking for a small group of bloggers and online storytellers who could help us share our story. We hoped to be able to find 5 writers to start with, but once the applications started rolling in, we knew the final group would end up being a little larger than that. And our applicants didn’t make it easy to choose!

We ended up picking 7 HoliBloggers to join us for the 2022 season.

They’ll serve as ambassadors for the park and tell you their secrets. From tips and tricks to have the best trip, to what you can expect from a visit this season. A few of the topics they’ll be covering over the course of the next year include: Everything you need to know about taking a toddler to Holiday World, what to pack for a great day, 10 Instagram worthy spots in the park, to a Dad’s Guide to Visiting. They’ll be serving up 35 blog posts through April 2023.

We can’t wait for you to hear more from them. And the first post will hit the HoliBlog next weekend!

So, we’d like to introduce the whole gang.

Here are your HoliBloggers for the 2022 season:

Barb Webb from Louisville, Kentucky

Barb Webb is a sustainable living expert nesting just outside of Louisville, Kentucky. When she’s not chasing chickens around the farm or engaging in mock Jedi battles, she’s writing about country living, artisan culture, and exploring the roads less traveled.

Her newest books “GETTING BAKED” and “GETTING LAID” are cheeky guides offering a fun, in-depth journey into sustainable living topics including traditional and medicinal gardening.

Let’s hear it for this year’s HoliBloggers!

In addition to hearing stories from their visits to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, you might see them talk about staying next door at Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph, just across the river in accomodations provided by our friends at Visit Owensboro, or partnering with the Spencer County Visitors Bureau to experience all the great things to do around Santa Claus, Indiana.

Play Day 2022

Play Day is back!

Play Day is an annual event, where our friends at Easterseals Rehabilitation Center in Evansville invite 2,000 children with disabilities and their teachers and chaperones to come and enjoy a day at the park. We donate the discounted admissions proceeds from each Play Day to Easterseals. Their mission is: to make profound, positive differences in the lives of local people every day, and to change the way our community defines and views disability.

The event started in 1993, and we quickly realized this was an event that had to become an annual tradition.

Even when the pandemic hit, we worked together to create Pick Your Play Day in 2020 and 2021. Families could still access affordable tickets through Easter Seals, they just didn’t have a dedicated day.

Today, Play Day returned.

Even as the rain drizzled down at 9 am this morning, it was clear the weather wouldn’t be dampening the fun today.

Our Guests donned ponchos and raincoats and got to the serious business of riding rides and having fun.

With today’s event, we’ve raised over $575,000 since 1993.

The smiles say it all: rain or shine, it’s a beautiful day.

And after three years, and even with a few clouds in the sky, today just might have been the best Play Day EVER!
