Christmas In July: Pumpkin to Talk About

We’re coming up on the end of July.

Summer vacation’s coming to a close. We’re down to the final days of daily operation. And soon both parks will only be open on weekends.

And there are only a few days left to see Holidays in the Sky, our amazing drone and fireworks spectacular! The last show is Sunday, July 30.

If you haven’t seen it yet, but are planning to visit, you’re in for a real treat. We recently upgraded our entire swarm of 400 drones. The new drones have even brighter LEDs than before, and our show has never looked brighter or crisp than it does now. Heck, if you’re a regular or Season Passholder who’s seen it once this season, but not since the upgrade on July 15, you definitely need to make another trip to the park and catch the show one last time!

It’s also Christmas in July. And this year, we have a special treat for you with our latest giveaway.

This giveaway doesn’t just include two tickets to Holiday World this season and two overnights in a Holiday Cottage next door at Lake Rudolph. Not even close. We’re also throwing in two 2024 Season Passes for the winner.

That’s right, Season Passes are almost on sale. So something’s definitely going on at the park, right?

If you’ve been following along, you might have seen a certain post on social media, post on our blog, a certain episode of the Official Holiday World Podcast, through the texts we’ve been sending, and even through a new website that’s popped up on the internet. You might have noticed a few more gravy boats around the park as well. It’s possible that’s tied to the construction happening in the Thanksgiving section of the park. That’s kind of interesting, right?

And we’re about to spill the gravy on what’s happening. You won’t want to miss this announcement.

Be sure to keep an eye out on August 1. We’re going to spill the gravy at 8am Central.

Psst. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to sign up to receive text messages from the park. You’ll find out what’s going on just a few minutes before everyone else.

In the meantime, enter to win this giveaway. There are a few options you can use to enter daily!

We’re giving away two tickets to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in 2023, two 2024 Season Passes, plus two nights in a Holiday Cottage at Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph. Overnights at Lake Rudolph must be used between August 6 and September 10.

A Must-Do for Coaster Enthusiasts: The EarlyBird Guided Tour

When you ride a roller coaster, you never have more than a few seconds to admire the view on top of the lift hill. Unless…you walk to the top.

And Holiday World is giving you the chance to do exactly that.

That’s just one part of the EarlyBird Guided Tour. Now before I talk about the climb, let me tell you what the EarlyBird Guided Tour is.

The tour is a separately ticketed experience at Holiday World that runs for 2 hours, weather permitting, before the park opens.

This premium tour is a coaster enthusiast’s dream.

You get a 2 hour behind-the-scenes look at The Voyage and Thunderbird roller coasters, trek to the top of The Voyage’s lift hill, Meet & Greet with a coaster technician, and take the first public flight of the day on Thunderbird.

You also get an All-Day Digital Photo Pass, $15 Souvenir HoliCash Gift Card, three single-use Quick Access Passes, and a souvenir lanyard.

Now back to the sweat-inducing ascent ahead of us.

I’d like to mention that I didn’t do this alone. Along for this adventure was my girlfriend and my mom. Neither of them are the biggest fans of heights, but they came out of this tour loving it. They may have been white knuckling the railing, but can you really blame them when you’re 163 feet in the air?

I’m not sure how long the walk up the lift hill was, and to be honest, I don’t think time exists when you’re walking up a coaster. It could’ve been 3 minutes or 30 minutes. However, we were told it’s around 300 steps.

Once you’re at the peak of the lift hill, you can take out your phone and capture as many photos and videos as you want. My only warning is to be extra careful. If your phone falls, there’s not enough glue in the world to save it.

The view was incredible.

You can see all of Holiday World, Splashin’ Safari, and beyond.

HoliBlogger Max at the top of The Voyage's Lift Hill | EarlyBird Tour

If the tour stopped here, I would’ve been happy. There’s something very powerful about standing on top of a roller coaster, but if you need to be humbled, just look down.

Once we landed back on Earth. Chris, a coaster technician, took us on our next leg of the tour.

Chris fed us with enough coaster facts to last a few lifetimes. We learned about the daily maintenance routine to ensure the coaster is running safely, saw the very heavy packs they carry each morning with all the tools needed to make any repairs, and learned why different types of woods matter for different parts of the track.

Did you know that when the wood on a wooden coaster is replaced, it can actually make the coaster a few mph faster than it was before the replacement?

After that, we moved to Thunderbird.

We talked with Chris, another coaster technician, to learn the workings of their steel coaster.

He took us up to the maintenance bay where the trains go for routine maintenance and repairs. And we got to stand at the control center where Thunderbird is operated.

We got to see the opening crew of Thunderbird run through the tail end of their opening checklist. As the last check was made, we were invited to ride the first public flight of the day.

As we launched into the sunny skies of Santa Claus, our tour had come to a close.

We exited the ride just as the gates of Holiday World had opened and Guests were excitedly rushing to Thunderbird to be the first riders of the day. Little did they know…

Whether you’re a coaster enthusiast or love to go behind the scenes, the EarlyBird Guided Tour is waiting for you next time you visit Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari.

From Dots to Drones: Holidays in the Sky Comes to Life

Previewing the Show

I had the opportunity to see Holidays in the Sky in dot format before seeing the show in person.

What do I mean by that? I mean the animation that is used in the planning stages of the show that’s used to program the little guys to make the shapes you see in the sky.

You might say, “Stephanie, wouldn’t that ruin the in person show for you?” And to that I say, “It absolutely did not ruin it for me.” And let me tell you why!

Each dot on the screen each represents one drone. For example, this video clip shows one of the animations for the Christmas portion of the show. It shows Santa Claus riding off into the sky and dropping presents behind him.

When you see the show in person, it takes up a huge portion of the sky and not just a small box on a laptop screen. You can see the rotation of the reindeer. They don’t just disappear into the night sky. They rotate and appear to fly off at an angle.

In person, you get the full surround sound music to accompany the drone show – and the music does so perfectly. You get the ambiance of all the “Oohs” and “Aahs” from the crowd.

And you get an occasional laugh. Like during the Halloween section of the show. I won’t ruin it for you. But it involves Frankenstein’s monster, and it was my favorite part.

Finally, you get to experience the fireworks that are timed to go off during different parts of the show. They’re the icing on the cake and some extra oomph to the drone show. You get them at the expected New Year’s Eve portion of the show.

What Did We Think?

If you were to ask the three children who were with us for Holidays in the Sky what their favorite parts were, their answers are as follows:

  • The DJ dance party with the glow-in-the-dark floor!
  • The Christmas to New Year’s Transition that the drones do
  • The Frankenstein surprise for Halloween

The adults loved those parts as well.

We also loved the Elevated Experience that came with premium seating for the DJ Dance Party and drone show. I’m not a huge crowd person so I appreciated the guaranteed seat.

It was also really nice at the end of a hot day to have bottles of water and snacks! Definitely don’t miss the drone show on your next visit and consider upgrading to the Elevated Experience!

Fun In the Sun: Spending A Day In Splashin’ Safari

Prepare for a day of thrilling water rides, refreshing wave pools, and exclusive cabana comfort.

That’s right, we’re heading to Santa Claus, Indiana for a day filled with family fun at Splashin’ Safari! This ultimate water park adventure is not only packed with exhilarating attractions but also offers a range of amenities for everyone!

I’ve put together a few tips for spending a day at Splashin’ Safari, from exhilarating attractions to relaxing spots and mouthwatering dining options. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a water enthusiast, or simply seeking a memorable family outing, Splashin’ Safari has something you covered.

Let’s dive in!

Your Oasis of Comfort

Elevate your water park experience with a private cabana rental!

Splashin’ Safari offers comfortable cabanas that provide a dedicated space to relax, unwind, and recharge in the shade. We checked in as soon as we entered the park because it’s the perfect spot to safely store all your belongings and serves as a great meeting place for your crew. With amenities like lounge chairs, shaded seating, and personalized service, cabanas offer a little oasis amidst the busy excitement of the park!

Another cabana rental perk? Meal delivery!

Trade in the hassle of spending time hunting down something for everyone to eat. Order delicious meals and have them delivered directly to your cabana with the new mobile ordering service! It’s a hassle-free way to fuel up and satisfy your cravings without missing out on any of the action. The menu offers tons of options and cuisines.

Pro tip: you can’t go wrong with Splashin’ Safari pizza!

What to Ride

From towering water coasters to family-friendly attractions, Splashin’ Safari has something for everyone.

The spot our family always agrees to visit? The Bahari River! Our toddlers love splashing their way down the river while the adults have a leisurely float!

With a wide range of experiences available, everyone in your group will find something they love.

Here are a few recommendations if visiting with little ones:

  • Safari Sam’s SplashLand: When first introducing our little ones to the waterpark, this was their must-see spot. Last summer, we spent entire days camped out here watching them zoom down each of the toddler-friendly slides!
  • Kima Bay: Welcome to another family-friendly spot that will keep the kids entertained for hours! The towering play structure is filled with various water slides, sprayers and is topped with a bucket that tips tons of water every few minutes.
  • Bahari Wave: The shallow-to-deep entrance is perfect for all ages, making it safe for even the littlest swimmers. Bonus: life jackets are available, so no need to pack and haul around floaties or a vest for your little ones!

FREEBIES!

If cabana services and splashing through the wave pool don’t have you convinced, I have another trick up my sleeve.

Debatably, the best perk is how many FREEBIES are included with your visit. Splashin’ Safari keeps you hydrated with free soft drinks, water and a variety of sports drinks. There are multiple areas to grab an on-the-go beverage or fill up a tervis you picked up in the gift shop!

Guests can also skip on packing sunscreen thanks to the free SPF, available at tons of spots throughout the park.

My favorite new perk? The FREE Pre-K Season Passes! This is an online exclusive, so head to register your little one here prior to your visit.

Grab your swimsuits and flip flops – a day at Splashin’ Safari promises a fantastic blend of excitement, relaxation, and fun for the whole family! From thrilling water slides to the convenience of ordering meals right to your cabana, you’ll bask in the ease and memories made during your worry-free visit.

Get ready to make a splash – plan your visit here!

Tips To Make the Most Out of Your First Visit to Holiday World

If you are looking to have the best day ever at Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari, then you have come to the right spot.

We’re sharing over 40 of our best tips with you.

Visiting any amusement park for the first time may seem overwhelming and you don’t want to miss out on anything. Yes, FOMO is a real thing! You saved up and now it’s time to plan your trip. Are you ready to have the best time making memories with your family at Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari?

We have lived in Indiana all our lives and recently visited the park for a long weekend. Let me be the first to say that we will be back again and again! Who doesn’t love FREE parking, FREE sunscreen, and FREE soft drinks?? I am sharing our best tips and recommendations to help you make the most out of your day and your kids will say that it was “THE BEST DAY EVER.”

About Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari

You get 2 parks for one price! That’s right you can explore over 120 acres of rides and slides all in the same day. We went back and forth throughout the day to cool off.

Holiday World is located in Santa Claus, Indiana and about 2 1/2 hours south of Indianapolis. It is by far one of the cleanest parks that we have visited. Plus, like I said before, you get FREE parking, sunscreen, and soft drinks. There is truly something for everyone from toddlers to teenagers and every age in between. Yes, even adults can join in on the fun!

My youngest enjoyed the smaller slides like those in Kima Bay and my oldest rode the water coasters like Mammoth and Cheetah Chase Water Coasters over and over again.

Pre-Planning Tips

Some advanced planning can help you save money as well as provide the best experience.

Here are a few tips to consider when booking your trip.

  • Best Days to visit are Tuesday through Thursday. There are typically smaller crowds on these days while Saturday is the busiest time to visit.
  • Check out local Stay & Play Packages for discounts on tickets.
  • Consider Season Passes to not only save on multiple visits but also get discounts on food, locker rentals, gift shop purchases, tickets for friends, and more.
  • FREE Pre-K Season Pass for 4- & 5-year-olds. That’s right FREE. (Don’t forget age-confirming documents to process their pass). Kids 3 and under are also FREE.
  • Pick Your Date one-day ticket option is cheaper than the Any Day Ticket.
  • Don’t forget about 2-Day and 3-Day Flex Tickets. You can also purchase Next Day Tickets for $30 while still in the park.
  • Renting a Cabana or Cheetah Chaser Lounger is totally worth it! New in 2023, you can place a mobile food order to have it delivered to your cabana! Plus, they offer a mini-fridge and locking cabinet in the cabana. Cheetah Chasers have shade with two chase lounges, small cooler, locking cabinet, and even a charging port for phones!
  • Review the park map along with height restrictions before you arrive.
  • Yes, the Digital Photo Pass is worth it but opt for the all-season digital photo pass. Your kids can use their phone number at self-checkout if they don’t carry a pass with them on the rides.
  • The park is on Central Standard Time. Keep that in mind if visiting from other areas or even parts of Indiana.
  • Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is cashless this year so consider converting cash to Holicash gift cards and wristbands to use throughout the park. We considered loading money for each kid on a wristband for the day and plan to try it next time. Balances on wristbands can be transferred to gift cards or back to the original form of payment at the end of a visit.

What to Wear & Pack for A Day At the Park

  • Pack a waterproof backpack to store all your items. We found one on Aamazon.
  • Take a waterproof phone pouch with lanyard to wear your phone. I wore my phone with season pass and credit card (Apple Pay, Google Pay, ReadyCARD, or HoliCash are accepted too). I didn’t carry anything else from slide to slide, not even a towel.
  • Plan to get an all-day locker rental (small or large sizes available). You can get up to 4 wristbands to access the locker throughout the day.
  • Pack light! You really don’t need a lot of stuff. We barely used towels and just dried off walking to the next ride.
  • Bring cups for toddlers. You don’t need a reusable cup for the drink oasis unless you have a little one that can’t drink from a disposable cup yet. No need to carry more items around that could possibly get lost.
  • Water shoes are a must! The pavement can get hot walking in the water park from one attraction to the next. You will thank me later for this one.
  • Consider wearing quick dry clothes. My husband and boys wore their swim trunks and a quick dry shirt. I wore a pair of light weight shorts and quick dry tank top over my swimsuit. You will need shoes, shorts, and shirt to re-enter from the waterpark.

Meal & Snack Tips

  • Family pizza meal deal available at Santa’s Merry Marketplace and Safari Pizza is your best option for feeding the family. The meal includes a 16” sausage, pepperoni, or cheese pizza with 4 sides and dipping sauces. You can choose 2 breadsticks or an order of French fries as one of the 4 sides. Trust me when I say that this is really good pizza too!
  • Don’t skip the Blue ice cream at Udderly Blue Ice Cream.
  • Get snacks before the live shows at The Hoosier Celebration Theater. Check showtimes online at HolidayWorld.com/Today. There are several locations to get snacks or drinks right by the theater. Sweet Stuff offers ice cream, popcorn, and cotton candy. There are also funnel cakes, lemon shake-ups, and Ben’s soft pretzels close by. I think my boys ate a total of 10 pretzels over 2 days!
  • Wildebeestro has kids’ meals at a reasonable price.
  • Eat at Plymouth Rock Café indoors to escape the heat of the day and get Thanksgiving type foods.
  • 4th of July section has great fair food that is very family friendly.

Itinerary Recommendations

  • Arrive on time for the park to open. The waterpark usually opens one hour later.
  • Take a picture of your paper ticket with your phone.
  • Don’t worry if the weather becomes an issue with the Worry-Free Weather Guarantee. This is activated when weather closes a portion of the attractions for a period of 90 minutes on the day you visit. You can now use your ticket for admission on another day of your choice.
  • Get Phone Find Wristbands for your little ones to wear with your phone number on it just in case they get lost. Also take a photo of your kid with what they are wearing on that day with your phone. If lost, a park employee can call your phone number to reunite you with your child.
  • Consider renting a wagon or stroller for your little one if you don’t bring your own. There are hills in the park and little feet can get tired.
  • Make your way to the front of the water park to secure a locker. They sell out quickly so you will want to grab one first.
  • Start at the back of the park and work your way to the front for shorter wait times. Thanksgiving is a great place to go for bigger roller coasters like The Voyage and Thunderbird.
  • Wait at the entrance to the waterpark in Thanksgiving for it to open. Then head straight for the larger water coasters. This entrance location will get you there faster than at the front of the waterpark when the ropes drop.
  • If coasters aren’t your thing and you want chairs to set up “camp” then go straight to the wave pools to spread out your towels and stuff on chairs.
  • Parent Swap is a game changer with little ones. For us, one parent waited with our two older boys in line to ride then the other parent came up to the exit with younger son to swap. My older two boys could ride a second time with the other parent too.

Holidays in the Sky Drone & Fireworks Show Tips

It can be a long day at the park but trust me you will not want to skip Holidays in the Sky. This show occurs nightly June 17th – July 30th, 2023 and it is FREE. With over 400 drones in the sky, it is a spectacular sight to see. Our whole family loved it and probably my favorite part of the day.

  • Consider the New Elevated Experience for the best seat in the house of the drone and fireworks show. This experience also offers finger-food and bottled water.
  • Once the park closes head to the German American Bank Party Plaza for a show you will not want to miss.
  • Light the Night DJ Dance Party starts 30 minutes before Holidays in the Sky. Your kids will love the lighted floor, dancing, flashing lights, bubbles, and of course the music!
  • Save some souvenir money for the light up toys available to purchase here.
  • There are food options and a drink oasis in the Party Plaza.
  • Grab a seat on the grass lawn or by the bathroom area (towels work great) for the start of the Holidays in the Sky.

Be sure to follow the Holiday World Fans Faceboook Group for more tips and information for your next visit.

The Best Holiday

Photo of Construction site, mostly concealed by construction fence. Former Pilgrim's Plunge Station has partial demolition.

With the 4th of July behind us, I can’t help but notice that each holiday has its committed fans. Have you ever met a true Halloween fan? Or a true Christmas fan? We love to see that passion for the holidays for obvious reasons.

My favorite holiday doesn’t come every year. It’s part of a magical season we theme park fans like to call “Tease Season.” You know it’s “Tease Season” when you can smell the fresh dirt breaking at parks all around the nation, and wonder, “What are they doing next?”

My favorite holiday is called “Announcement Day.” In the days and weeks leading up, I get to read about fans slowly figuring out what’s going on.

Two weeks ago, a few news outlets picked up the shipping info from a ride manufacturer on a package headed toward us. Will I link it for you? Heck no. If we’re digging, you should too. 😉

Headline reads: Is a New Roller Coaster Coming to Holiday World in Indiana?

The day this dropped was like Christmas morning to me.

And we’ve decided we’re finally ready to start stirring, or shall I say, “whisking,” the metaphorical gravy.

Sign up for 2024 updates at the bottom of this blog post and find out when we’re making our online announcement.

Here are some questions we know you’re simmering over… and a recent construction photo:

Photo of Construction site, mostly concealed by construction fence. Former Pilgrim's Plunge Station has partial demolition.

We know everything… why aren’t you just confirming it?

First of all, where’s the fun in that? Second, there’s more to this story than hardware and labels on shipping containers.

I’m cornfused. Where are you building right now?

We’re building where the fence is in the Thanksgiving section, North of Mayflower, and East of The Voyage.

What’s this I’m hearing about a boomerang?

That’s awfully personal, but yes. I did happen to live with my mom (or “boomerang” back home) for a few years after college.

Have I noticed more gravy boats than usual?

Are you implying that we had the forethought to put a gravy boat in Holidays in the Sky and threw a gravy boat in the Gobbler Getaway queue behind Abigail? Now that’s just crazy!

I saw that the name is Gravy Boat. Can you at least confirm that?

You found the project name! Just like Thunderbird’s project name was Big Turkey.

I saw a post on Facebook with the ride picture on it. It has a train on the front!

That’s the type of coaster our fans think we’re getting. I can confirm that there will not be a train engine on the front of whatever it is we’re building.

How have we made it this far and you haven’t even confirmed that you’re building a roller coaster?

You didn’t read all this way for nothing. We’re building a roller coaster.

Anything else?

If you’ve listened to the Official Holiday World Podcast for a while, you probably know plenty about the way we approach new attractions. My whole family is excited to bring you this next project, and I think my dad would have been too.

That’s all we’ve got for now. But we’ll see you soon. Sign up for our emails and texts below to make sure you don’t miss a thing. That includes the date (and time) of my favorite holiday: Announcement Day!

We’ve got a lot cooking in the next few weeks.
